Career choice process from the perspective of former mainstream school students with reduced individual learning objectives at the lower secondary level

DOI:

https://doi.org/10.5282/breakingbarriers/9

Abstract

This article reports on how former mainstream students with reduced individual learning objectives (RILO) during lower secondary school experienced the career choice process before transitioning to dual vocational education and training (VET). The analysis is based on four qualitative interviews conducted as part of a Swiss longitudinal study on integrative school measures. The interview data were analyzed with a focus on career exploration, social influences, and perceived barriers during the career choice process. The findings reveal several mechanisms that may complicate the transition to upper secondary education - such as limited career exploration, insufficient social support, or the visibility of RILO in school reports. At the same time, the participants describe support from parents and schools as an important resource in the career choice process.
