Author Guidelines

Authors are invited to make a submission to this journal. All submissions will be assessed by an editor to determine whether they meet the aims and scope of this journal. Those considered to be a good fit will be sent for peer review before determining whether they will be accepted or rejected.

Before making a submission, authors are responsible for obtaining permission to publish any material included with the submission, such as photos, documents and datasets. All authors identified on the submission must consent to be identified as an author. Where appropriate, research should be approved by an appropriate ethics committee in accordance with the legal requirements of the study's country.

An editor may desk reject a submission if it does not meet minimum standards of quality. Before submitting, please ensure that the study design and research argument are structured and articulated properly. The title should be concise and the abstract should be able to stand on its own. This will increase the likelihood of reviewers agreeing to review the paper. When you're satisfied that your submission meets this standard, please follow the checklist below to prepare your submission.

Manuscript Preparation

Manuscripts must be submitted as Word files in docx format and prepared according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th edition). The editors reserve the right to adapt manuscripts to bias-free language. You can find the guidelines of the 7th edition of the APA here: https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines

Original articles

Articles are peer-reviewed and comprise 45,000 characters with spaces. Approx. 5 figures or tables are recommended. We charge a fee (APC) of 150 EURO for a specialist article. If the article is longer than 45,000 characters, each additional 10,000 characters costs 25 EURO. Likewise, each additional table and figure costs 25 EURO.

The journal publishes theoretical papers, systematic reviews, meta-analyses and empirical articles following a double-blind peer review process.

The theoretical papers and reviews may include a literature review, which can be either narrative or quantitative. Such a paper may also present a new theory or criticize an existing one.

Meta-analyses summarize quantitative information from different studies. Corresponding manuscripts must contain a table of the studies with the values of all descriptive statistics, moderators and effect sizes. They should also include analyses of publication bias. Authors must store data and scripts, code or syntax in a permanent repository (unless they are granted an exemption). Papers reporting a meta-analysis should follow the relevant guidelines (e.g. PRISMA) and the APA reporting standards for quantitative meta-analyses (MARS) or qualitative meta-analyses (QMARS).

An empirical study involves conducting original or replication studies using empirical data. When submitting a study, authors must ensure that their manuscript clearly states the research question and includes a detailed methodology section describing the procedures and statistical analyses used. Authors must store data and scripts, code or syntax in a permanent repository (unless they receive an exemption). The study should also include a comprehensive review of the relevant literature and position its contribution within the current understanding of pedagogy. A detailed discussion should interpret the findings, explaining the implications and how they relate to or challenge existing theories.

We advocate the prior preregistration of the research conducted with an analysis plan in an independent, institutional registry (e.g. http://aspredicted.org/, http://clinicaltrials.gov/, http://socialscienceregistry.org/, https://osf.io/, http://egap.org/designregistration/, http://ridie.3ieimpact.org/). The results may be as expected or contrary to expectations. The pre-registration of studies includes the registration of the study design, variables and treatment conditions. The inclusion of an analysis plan involves specifying the sequence of analyses or the statistical model to be reported. An advantage of this procedure is that it strengthens the integrity of the research by outlining the plans prior to the study, increasing transparency, preventing bias and facilitating reproducibility. A link to the frozen pre-registration with a registry must be provided to the journal prior to publication.

Comments

Comments have an editor review and no peer review. Commentaries comprise 20,000 characters with spaces. They do not contain any figures or tables. We charge a fee of 50 EURO for a commentary. If the article is longer than 20,000 characters, each additional 10,000 characters costs 25 EURO. Likewise, each additional table and illustration costs 25 EURO.

Commentaries deal with current topics in the magazine. They are comparable to editorials or refer to another article in the magazine. The commentary analyzes critically and openly. It aims to advance the entire discipline. The commentary refers to relevant literature and research. Such a commentary should encompass all facets of the topic, including ethical considerations, and express a persuasive perspective or stance that either supports or opposes the topic.

Practical contribution from school and university

Practice articles have an editor review and no peer review. Practice articles comprise 30,000 characters with spaces. They are recommended to contain 3 figures or tables. We charge a fee of 100 EURO for a practice article. If the article is longer than 30,000 characters, each additional 10,000 characters costs 25 EURO. Likewise, each additional table and illustration costs 25 EURO.

Professional work is characterized by continuous further development. The development of concepts in and for pedagogical practice at school, at an extracurricular place of learning, at university and other educational institutions are therefore important cornerstones of professionalization. Practical contributions present a concept based on theory or empirical analysis and outline practical experience. Where possible, the pedagogical materials are stored in a permanent repository (osf.io) or published as an appendix or linked.
